Re: Transmission: Velvet-drive or others?

Didn't see your last post BUSIA. That's a good point on the rotation. How can you tell with the pump? Is it marked somewhere on the housing?

Re: Transmission: Velvet-drive or others?

Thanks for the replies. I saw a video online of a guy rebuilding one, and a look at the schematics makes it appear straightforward. Parts seem to be affordable as well. I'd probably rebuild it regardless of the condition of the fluid. Why risk putting it all together just to pull it apart again? How...

Re: Replacing aft deck

What kind of cost difference would one be looking at replacing a deck with plate aluminum vs. plywood vs. a PVC type deck? Wouldn't aluminum transmit engine noise and heat more readily than wood? I would think that it would. I sure do like the idea of using aluminum even if it would require a sound ...

Re: Transmission: Velvet-drive or others?

Thanks for the input fellas. Sounds like a 71c should work for me. EW thanks for the offer, and I'll keep it in mind as I poke around for an engine. I'm looking for 1:1 ratio, as I see no reason a 350 would have any trouble pushing a Sportsman. There is a 71c near me on Clist for $250. Looks like it...

Re: Seacock Replacement

These are two very helpful write-ups, with pictures. I learned a good bit about the different metals and types of seacocks, ball-valves, and ways of mounting them. He focuses more on fiberglass hulls, most of the information still applies. http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/seacock_primer http://www...

Transmission: Velvet-drive or others?

I've been doing some research and poking around for available engines and transmissions to repower my Sportsman with. The engine in the boat is going for scrap so I can choose whatever I'd like for a power plant. Currently, I'm leaning towards a 350, in large part for parts availability. My next que...

Re: 1970's Sportsman Restoration

I did see the post from express28. Hopefully the stars will align and I can pick it up. It's a haul from Maryland to Maine so I'll have to try and get it when I'm down that way.

Eyes peeled in the meantime for something a little closer!

Re: EFI Repower

Excellent point Jeff. The three ways I can think of to get around O2 sensor are: 1) bypass it all together with a closed-loop computer reprogram, which would essentially turn it into a carburetor; 2) use a dry manifold that would allow stock placement of the sensor, which would result in a lot of he...

EFI Repower

I'm looking into repowering a 26' Sportsman. It has an old For-Dagenham Diesel engine; and transmission that looks like a velvet drive. Both are frozen after years of sitting (25+). I'd like to use a GM 350 block as I've had good luck with them and parts seem to be readily available. Fuel injected i...

Re: 1970's Sportsman Restoration

Thanks for the replies, fellas. EWRice, the diesel is in-line with the shafts. If anything it's weight is further forward than a gas V-8. Either way, it's undoubtedly heavier than a gas power-plant. It's similar to the Lehman diesels and I'm not entirely sure that it isn't a Lehman. I remember my da...
