Re: Diesel Repower 1989 32' Fisherman

I don't have a painted bilge and it seems to be just fine. It does see rainwater that gets in occasionally, but there is little or no salt and I have seen no corrosion. Top builders like Burger paint the interiors of their hulls with white enamel, which looks stunning and is very easy to work in. It...

Re: PORTABLE GENERATORS "WARNING!"

I certainly agree that there is a CO hazard with a generator, but I fail to see the electrocution problem. A portable generator is indeed supposed to be grounded when in use, just as your marina power is. That means that the frame of the generator should be connected to the hull, the neutral out sho...

Re: interior removal for mold mitigation

I redid one M with cheap 1/4" ply and used foam insulation, the stuff that comes in sheets, by cutting it into rectangles to wedge between the ribs. My current boat I am using better ply, and Reflectix insulation, which is like aluminized bubble-wrap and can be tacked to the back of the panels ...

Fastjeff:

I am sorry to hear that you are selling your boat -- but I toured the US in a caravan as a college student in the 60's and there is much to see... Liz and I wish you the best and thank you for the help you have been with our boat thru the years....

Re: flybridge ignition switches

I have diesels so my engine wiring does not apply to most Marinettes. I did, however, wire the hot to the ignition switch on the upper station from the IGN out at the lower station. This way, you have to turn the lower switches on to enable the flybridge switches. I did this back when I had a pre-te...

Re: How much bilge water is acceptable?

My M is deepest at the bow, and that's where the water goes. A properly installed bilge pump hose rises vertically to a point somewhat higher than the thruhull, and the hose then runs at a down angle to the thruhull. This reduces the amount of flowback when the bilge pump stops pumping. There are so...

Re: electric inside lights

LED lights have come a long way and I have installed 1600-lumen overhead LED lights in my M. I bought them from China. These lamps are equivalent to a 100W bulb and draw a couple of amps at 12V. It is so much easier to stick with 12V lighting, which is safer and only needs small switches which can b...

I have lived with a pair of Perkins 6-354 diesels for 15 years now, and I am familiar with Cummins engines because there is one in my 91 Dodge pickup, which I purchased new. Both engines are excellent. The Cummins has trucked me around for 1/4M miles with almost no service. The Perkins have a simila...

Re: Generator comparison-Westerbeke vs Kohler - opinions on

I have wired up a circuit that drops some ac loads when other loads come on. For instance, my water heater shuts off automatically when the stove or microwave come on, and so forth. I did this because my dockside power is limited and I don't like to pull too much power from the dock. I did this by w...

Re: Fuel gauge sending unit

I use electronic senders from http://centroidproducts.com/ that are made with a wire inside a tube. The electronics measures the capacitance between wire and tube and figures out how much of it has fuel (or water) in it and drives the standard gauge. Have been using them for years, have bought at le...
