Just found this in my Mercruiser manual: A Chevy 305 -8 weighs less than 12 pounds less than a 350. So why would anyone use a 305?
Beats me.

Re: MerCruiser Repower question
..."Naval engineering is one of the most fascinating subjects" You said it! Before I discovered the Wonderful World of Marinettes, I had an old Bayliner 28 footer. It would cruise all day at about 25 mph (3,500 rpm), but that SOB would not go over 29 mph no matter what I did. Threw a whole...

Re: MerCruiser Repower question
Others (John Hall) on this site (and Diver Dan) repowered their 32 footer twin-engined big Ms with uprated engines. John used 325 hp Chevies and had to buy 4 blade specials from Australia to get her right. Dan (the mad fiend!) repowered with big block Chevies (that intruded into the cabin) and never...

The condition of those hard-to-find manifolds should be what decides the issue: If they are bad, look for another engine.

Re: net wt.
Mark EVERYTHING, and make double sure the control lever operates what it should BEFORE starting the engines. Mr Doofus switched them once and it cost me an engine. Jeff (AKA Mr. Doofus) PS: The color code of the wires might not be useful due to fading. If so, you'll have to masking tape and mark eac...

Most often it's simple neglect.

Re: Auto Pilot systems
On a sad note, the same thing happened on the Bay a decade ago. Yacht without a human at the helm ran down and killed some fishermen who couldn't get their motor started fast enough to get out of the way.

Re: Oil Plug
The PCV port on the carb. I also used it to suck the oil out of the filter, to reduce that mess as well.
