Re: Michigan surveyor
When I needed a surveyor eons ago, Boat US (my choice for insurer) had a list of qualified surveyors in my area. Agree on the contract clause and also recommend that the surveyor be on the no-nonsense, strict side and, of course, that the seller/broker had no hand in selection. (chuckling at the imp...

Re: Aft Deck Restoration
RiverRatt -- see my post of Plasteak above. The only con is cost but it's virtually forever so the cost is one time. Very easy to work with. I used a scrap piece in my garden and 20 years later, as good as new under damp, shady conditions. On the boat, it was not harmed by sun

Re: Anti-fouling TriLux 33
I think ablative refers to what we'll call normal wear and tear -- pushing thru the water. A power wash blast is something else. I recall getting a power wash annually at haul out and only small bits of paint were removed. For some reason, your paint doesn't appear to be bonding as tightly as it sho...

Re: Hull Anodes
Here's something I used to do with keel & trim tab zincs: when they were almost half worn, I put them aside and replaced with fresh ones. When the fresh ones wore almost to the halfway point, I would clean them and mount the cleaned old ones -- sort of double zincs -- along with the recently wor...

Re: Hull Anodes
Is it best to apply anodes when the hull is bare, before any paint is applied? If so, what protects the hull surface under the anodes? Is it just natural Al oxidation? What keeps the hull from pitting under the anodes, esp in salt or brackish water? Sandblast the surface beneath the anodes. Then ta...

Re: Bottom paint recommendation
Just a reminder that when yard finishes sand or soda blasting, they must put first coat of primer on same day... Wait too long (more than a few hrs) and the benefit of sandblasting is lost and the new coatings won't hold long.

Re: Aft Deck Restoration
My plasteak bowsprit held up for years with no maintenance and always looked like new (was still going strong when I sold it). With more energy for a project, I would have covered rear deck with it. Mine was T&G (tongue and groove) - no glue. For the rear deck I would have used some kind of mfr-...

Re: 318/392 Stroker Motors
That is very good performance - 29 mph at 4,000 with a lot of wind resistance up top and extra weight below. We had a similar boat with 318's, same props and trans and settled for 24mph at best.
