Re: picture of hull annodes.

Here's a pix when I had the bottom blasted and recoated. the anode is covered in tape so it wouldn't get painted. Keel anodes are attached to the horizontal (essentially level) portion of the keel, a little forward of amidships. They are thru bolted using stainless bolts. That is through a hole dril...

Re: What to look for on a inspection

With your experience, you are ahead of the curve. When I was looking for a cruiser, I fell in love with Sea Ray, then marinette, then Sea Ray, then Marinette. Fickle me. The Sea Ray was beamy, roomy and probably quite stable when it needed to be. But I started reading about fiberglass osmosis which ...

Re: electronics upgrade

Just recalled this: Airmar makes xducers for most mfr's of fishfinders. Call em to see whether there's one for your unit that will shoot thru aluminum.

Re: What to look for on a inspection

I think TinChips gave you an excellent rundown of things to look at. I would go at it from a little different perspective because, IMHO, most of these items are normal wear/tear on any old boat and quite typical on aluminum M's. For example, I would expect some corrosion at stanchion bases. That's t...

Re: paint

Can't figure the connection between flat paint and aluminum. BUT..there's a big but....for the foredeck (not sides), it is a good idea to use flat or at least flatter coating to cut down on glare. It's hard enough to see ahead with water reflecting light at all angles. Gloss on the foredeck doesn't ...

Re: 1978 37 Express - CL

Some BigMs came from the plant with a freshwater flushing system. I understand it involved a valve just downstream of the seacock where the owner would attach a freshwater hose, turn on the freshwater, turn off the seacock and then turn on the valve to flush the engine. I believe it's Groco that se...

Re: 37 sedan flybridge removal

As an aside, someone of the forum recently had experience transporting long distance. You may wish to research the thread here. I think he was going from Annapolis to Texas so key on Annapolis and see if that helps. The 32's were bolted and I can't think of why welding would have been used. The advi...

Re: Aluminum in Salt water

Some swear by putting pepper in the mix to ward off critters. It could be an urban (marine) myth. But the one way to get a feeling is to put some of that on a piece of metal and on another piece, straight anti foul. Dunk them in the drink for a few weeks and compare. I did that with interlux 33 on o...

Re: Aluminum in Salt water

good move hiring a surveyor and good questions. Find one that has surveyed aluminum boats, of course. And share your concerns. Boat US insurance helped me find mine. Don't accept recommendation of seller or broker for obvious (conflict of interest) reasons. BTW: contract should read " subject t...

Re: Aluminum in Salt water

Sorry, but you are misinformed. If it contains copper, it is a derivative, not pure copper. It's made especially for aluminum (and can be used on other materials as well). Many of us have used it for years with no ill effect. You have reasons important to you for not using it but those of us who hav...
