Yes both distributors are exactly the same .There is no such thing as a reversing distributor for these motors. Just check with Prestolite, holly pertronix, you can call Hurrikain Marine . I also had an issue like that for my application there were two different rotors.
The rotor that was installed was hitting the cap. the correct rotor solved that issue.
