Re: Output shaft nut size
It only clunks going into gear. 1:1 reduction. I found a service manual showing 1.5" nut.

Re: 318 spark plug wire replacement
If your replacing the wires, look for an Accel or similar cut to fit wire set. Put a set on another boat a few weeks ago. Solved a wire routing problem. Enabled us to put the wires around the manifolds. I use the MSD wire sets. They have an 8MM Street fire series that works well. Wires have a little...

Re: 360 Timing Marks
Check the main pulley on the front of the motor. There should be a timing tape on it.
For ease of setting timing, I lined up TDC with the main pulley and then painted a mark on the flywheel.

Output shaft nut size
Anyone know the output shaft nut size on a velvet drive 71C?
The port trans is clunking. Hoping it is either the output shaft nut or coupling.

Re: FWIW - 140 degree thermostats and raw water cooling
I've always run the 140 degree thermostats. The engineers had a reason to put them in the motor.

Re: FWIW - 140 degree thermostats and raw water cooling
I run 140 degree thermostats. Given the age of your motors, I would pull the exhaust manifolds and clean them out. You can take them to a shop for cleaning or DIY. I used a power washer with the 0 tip. It blew all kinds of crap out of the passages. The output side of the riser was almost completely ...

FWIW - 140 degree thermostats and raw water cooling
I have always wondered about the reason for 140 degree thermostats in raw water cooled engines. Fresh water cooled engines typically use a 165 degree thermostat. This is closer to the automotive temp of 180 degrees. Well, the answer was in my ABYC study materials. Raw water cooled engines are develo...

Transom Door Pics '34 M
The 34' my dad bought came with boxes of parts to reassemble. The previous owner was "restoring" the boat and never finished. Apparently, the transom door mounts are not very intuitive. Does anyone have a transom door and be willing to take a number of pictures from different angles? Would...

Huh. I was just back there on the Balus Creek side of the bay working on a Monterrey last weekend. Our son likes the little "beach" across from PR at the mouth of FC. I'll have to wander back and look for you. Send me your phone number.
