Lucas ZDDP additive is a really good product. AutoZone and other places sell it. Use half a bottle per engine.

I used the 15 W 40 (as I recall). I'd avoid that straight 30 weight oil--it'll murder the oil pump gearing on cold start up.

Try this: When you are CRANKING the motor over, have someone check the + post of the coil for voltage. You should see at least 10 volts there. What I think is happening here is that the starting ignition booster circuit is not operating. A wire on the starter solenoid sends full voltage to the coil ...

Probably correct; it might distort being pulled off.
Why are you removing the pulley? (If the unit needs a rebuild, you're better off by far buying a new unit for the rebuild kit is expensive.) The pulley does not have to come off to change the impeller.
