In saying "I may have this backwards" do you mean you may have installed the impeller backwards? If so, you'd see very obvious bubbling coming from under the boat.

I would modify what Wayne recommends: If there's ANY fuel in the tank, replace the fuel. Four years is way too old with any ethanol formulation. YOu could, very carefully, filter it but that is way too much effort for the value of the remaining fuel. Maybe, you could shlep it home and use it for you...
