Gray marine 401 engine

Post by Rockxx »

In trolling the local craigslist I found a 1962 Grey Marine 401 cubic inch motor for sale for $ 300.00. Motor is complete including carb and in looking at the photo, appears to have the transmission attached. Supposed to be the Buick block. Metalhead I believe this is the motor you like so thought someone might be interested. Ad says the motor haven't been run in 20 years.
Nashville Craig's list.

Regards to all,

It's a "Nailhead" all right, but God help you if you need new exhaust manifolds! I'd say way away from it.

Metalhead,
I have no interest, thought that at that price someone could salvage some parts they might be having trouble finding.
Is this the aluminum block like the two you're rebuilding?

No, The little Al engines were the ones Buick used in the smaller Skylark. That monster is the big car engine they used in the Electra 225's. May be hard to find parts for, but the thing is a "tank", pretty bulletproof.

Believe it or not, Barr still makes manifolds the last time I checked. They were 280hp. Gray marine did marinize the 225 and the aluminum 300 cids.

Ah, but are they in stock on the shelves! That's the question one has to ask. No way will they make you a new set for the molds are long gone.

Well - I tried :) - The guy sold it out from under me. I actually have several sets on NOS manifolds for this and the 215 engine.

Wow! That's amazing.

One might consider buying his entire stock and waiting to get rich.
