A word on Mallory brand ignition parts......

Post by ericinga »

I was informed by a marine supply company that Sierra has purchased the Mallory brand name. They have begun substituting Sierra parts for Mallory parts.

How do I know?

The previous owner, whom I've dubbed "Best Buy Bob", installed Sierra distributor caps and rotors (he left the box tops in the side cabinet for part number reference). The AL contacts corrode very quickly. Typically, I have purchased the Mallory branded caps and rotors due to the copper (or brass) contacts. Well, the caps received from the supplier were identical to the installed parts.

I contacted the supplier to register my concern. They told me about the Sierra change. I returned the parts and bought two Pertronix distributors. Done with the Mopar ignition system.

My big marine parts supplier notified me of this earlier this year. Same sierra parts but now with the Mallory price. I feel like my parts sources are going to put me out of business. Between cheap parts, people who don't care and parts departments being downsized to the bare minimum, it hurts. Bad. I am sick of banging my head against the wall.
