Friend of a friend approval - good or bad?

I am considering turning off registration for new users, and requiring new members to have a friend "vouch for them" or they have to use a non internet method to join.

Let me know what you all think.

Vouching would be a vouch for me hidden forum that current members post on but no one else can see.

or something else.

I don't think that would be the best way. I joined first way before I owned an M. I used the forum as a way to learn if I wanted to buy a boat that was 52 years old..... Now I have 2 :)

I could see having them send a short message explaining why they want to join and where they are located.

Right now we are asking for descriptions of boat and where you boat. Poll is closed.

I appreciate all the work you do to keep it going. For me, I think you should do what is easiest for you to keep the cyber trash out.
Thanks, Wayne

I say have prospective members do a short writeup on why they want to join so you know they're legit. I didn't have on either when I first joined but I sure glad I was able to.

Agree it must be a lot of work. Have you been having problems with new members causing you grief?

Thanks to all for suggestions, But to be clearer, We implemented the asking for boat information suggestion, not friend of a friend.
