Left Hand or Right Hand - What is standard?

Post by MetalHead »

Found this PDF today and thought it worth sharing.

Standard Rotation is Left Hand (Counter Clock Wise - CCW) looking from rear and Right Hand (Clock Wise - CW) looking at the belts and pulleys.

Thanks for sharing! i have had quite a few people not believe me when I say that my engine is reverse (right hand) rotation...even a boat mechanic or two.

If you ever need to buy a new starter for a reverse engine (I did last year) double check which way the new starter spins before buying it! On a reverse engine, the flywheel spins clockwise (viewed from transmission end of the engine) so the starter needs to spin CCW unless it's the kind that's mounted to the transmission. In that case, the starter needs to spin clockwise.

A simple concept that can still get you second guessing yourself a little.

Disclaimer....
Slightly (?!?!) off topic....

I had the same problem of CW or CCW when looking at a canoe...

And on top of all that my transmissions out is the reverse of my engine rotation !! So my reverse rotation engine is on my port side to allow the propellers to turn typically of most twin engine boats. It is simple but gets confusing.

If you think our boats are complicated, be happy you don't have a Chris Craft with their freaky SB Chevy conversions. They attached the trans to the FRONT of the motor, to get the oil pan lower (or some other dopey reason). The flywheel end was then in front! Adding to the confusion, the distributor was moved to the other end of the motor!

I'm sure more than one mechanic tore his (or her) hair out figuring out which end was up.
