Spark Plug Wires

Post by honestcharlie56 »

I usually see people complaining about the stock style spark plug wires. I bought a universal set with 90* plug ends and they fit great. Of course, you still have to cut the wires to fit and terminate the distributor end. See below!!

Looks good. Did you go under the manifolds or stuff the wires between the manifolds and valve covers?

Not only were the original wires corroded from the, as you have seen, sinking.....but I couldn't stand the fact that they were stuffed in there and hardly serviceable. They made breaking in an engine quite difficult, as I really like to plug the plugs often to check whats going on inside the cylinders. So I got these to route them outside of the manifolds. Just like you have recommended on both this site and the Marine Engine Forum. If we can get you on "The Hull Truth", Fast Jeff will be everywhere.

I'll take some pictures this morning when I go to the boat.

Not being a true "gear head" but more of a "shade tree mechanic" (tuff to do on a boat! :-) )...
Is there a downside to routing plug wires on the outside of the manifolds (length more than heat)?

I don't think so, but couldn't objectively prove it one way or the other. Mine are working fine though. Took a two hour cruise and checked the plugs, they looked great.

The strongest DIS-advantage to the factory wiring mess is it's very easy to confuse the wires.

The marina guys did that to me (during an insurance settlement deal) and it drove me nuts trying to cure a backfire under throttle. Changed all kind sort things before finding they had two plug wires reversed. (Dopey me; I should have done the 'pull one wire at a time from the distributor' test.)

All in all, much easy to work on the motor with the wire outside the manifolds.

Yes sir! I can easily pull one wire off, pull the plug, and then reinstall in no time flat. Used to have to sit there and fight the plug wires

Does anyone know of a set of wires pre-built that work outside the manifolds?? I have seen a couple of people what say big block chevy wire set do but really would like the part number if anyone has the info.(Mine run outside and I like it much better than the factory setup.)
Thanks

Performance Distributors (DUI) out of Memphis, Tn. Has excellent spark plug wires. Ordered mine four inches longer than an automotive 318 with straight spark plug boots. They fit perfect routing through the exhaust manifold openings. Check out their distributors when you go to their website. They were $99 a set a few years ago.
