Ceramic starter item

Post by GregM »

Can someone tell me what this is. It crumbled when I tried to remove it. I am not sure what to ask for at the local part store or if it is marine specific? Its for a 318 Chrysler motor I am rebuilding and is part of the starter circuit. Any advise on where to get a replacement would also be helpful?

That is your ignition ballast resistor. You must have electronic ignition. Sierra p/n 18-5451

I think the automotive ones are the same.

Hold on there !! You MUST use the marine specific ballast. The automotive version is not sealed and thus will cause an engine room fire. I think NAPA carries both auto and boat ballasts for close to the same price, but you MUST use the marine version.

Stick with marine! Got it, thank you for pointing that out! No fire hazard is worth saving a few bucks.

BigM
Definitely carry a spare and make sure it is a Marine ballast resistor. The back will be filled with ceramic or epoxy. 8-) There is no way of knowing when it will burn out. Usually at the worst possible time.
