Engine oil, transmission fluid and filter types for Chrysler 360

Post by oef0102 »

Asking what type of oil & filter is best for these Chrysler 360s.
-Standard conventional?
-Synthetic?
-Conventional high mileage?
-Some other variation?

What is the best brand of filter?
Mine is a 1975 with 900-some hours.

Additionally, how often should the transmission fluid be changed? is there a standard filter and/or gasket size to reference if trying to buy at a local parts store?

Thank you all for the help,

Since these motors use flat tappet cams, you MUST use an additive to prevent rounding over the cam lobes. (With 'modern' roller cam motors this is not a problem.) I use shell Rotella oil for this reason, and douse it with half a bottle of Lucas ZDDP additive, just to be sure.

Shell Rotello is available in straight 30W also.
I have used 15W40 in the past but I am going to 30W Shell rotello plus the ZDDP.

No. Straight 30W. Many recommend it for these older motors. Probably not ideal if you run it in the winter.
I have 1986 454 Crusaders and a single 360 in my old 28. I plan to go to 30W in both.

I strongly recommend multi-viscosity oils in any motor--especially an old motor with worn oil pump drive gears.

One of the greatest automotive advances is multi-vis oils, so why not use it?

Jeff

PS: I use 15W-40 in mine.

So Jeff, would you then recommend a 15w40 High Mileage oil for '88 (original - 1000 hours approx each) 318's?

Absolutely, but also add some ZDDP additive (like Lucas makes; half a can per engine).
