NAPA I get mine from there. Before replacing, I make sure they really are bad...
- put in pot on stove
- heat water to 130 deg (use a Harbor Freight infrared tester)
- raise water temp to 140 deg (or in the neighborhood) and watch that the copper pellet / spring system reacts (would equate to opening when t-stat's installed.
- if it opens, it's good - reuse
- if it doesn't open, or opens when the water temp's too high, replace.

I went with these 160 degree fail safes after loosing an engine due to a thermostat failing closed. I can watch the temp go from 160 to 180 then back down to 160.

Temp will shoot up after a motor, that has been working hard, suddenly shuts off.

A case in point: Running my old Merc OB the other day when a ground strap fell off. (Stupid mechanic!) Motor was at full song when that happened, and the temp shot up to 240 ' F. Normally runs about 120.

I don't know if I would recommend a 160 thermostat on a raw water application. In a closed system, just like on a car, the radiator cap puts 10-15 psi on the system, thus raising the boiling point. Raw cooling has no pressure on the system, so hot spots in the block and heads will boil the water, bubbles aerate the coolant passages, and the destruction begins.

The recommended Tstat for raw water is 140°
