New oil pump?

I can’t believe I did this, but after months of getting a 360 long block finished and installed, and running well, with Your help, I believe my oil pump is shot. A log story as to why I didn’t see this immediately before (questionable guage, sender, connector, wiring, and disbelief) , I finally installed a mechanical guage — no pressure. I think I ran this about 3-5 hours at various speeds since installation. Did not overheat. Sadly, just started to hear some noise (lifters and who knows what else).

Am I assuming the only option is to get a yard to pull this, replace the pump and reinstall. ... and hope l didn’t do permanent damage to the engine.

Anyone have any other thoughts I have missed?

I am sick at heart.

Bud

Arrgh! You might need to replace the bearings as well. Hope not. Feel really bad for you.

On my old boat, Mr. Port was replaced after it blew a head gasket and damaged the block. It lasted just 50 hours before a plastic bag or something got sucked into the water inlet and burnt it up.

Got pretty good at replacing engines!

Jeff- I am determined to fix this. I am going to lift the engine up to the deck, and after laying a 4 x4 deck to work on, pull the sump and replace the pump. I am going to have the oil tested, but I don’t know how much that will tell me .
What do you think I should pull to determine the state of the bearings?
- just checking movement in the pistons?
- pulling one or more crank bearings?
- pulling the main crank bearings?
- pulling cam shaft bearings?
I’m not sure how far I need to go to determine the damage to this engine!

Any thoughts are much appreciated!

All of the above, plus look for debris at the bottom of the pan.

Good luck!

Bud:

Let me know when you yank her out. I'll run over and take a look with you.

Mopar performance at one time sold a 5/16 hex shaft that would slide down the hole for the intermediate shaft and into the oil pump. The engine could be tested to make sure you have oil pressure by running a drill motor on the shaft to prime and test the motor for oil pressure. This could be done before installation to make sure the oil pump is doing its job.

You have to pull the intake manifold off and yank the geared pump drive shaft to try that, but it's worth doing.

I might be able to make something up if you want to try it.
