I'm looking into a boat up near Lake St Clair. If I finalize a deal this week, next I will want to find a surveyor.
Anyone here have any recommendations for a surveyor in that area?
Any other advice regarding a purchase agreement?
Anyone want to shoot me and stop this MADNESS? LOL

Nobody'll shoot ya....
... cuz owning a boat is both a labor of love and for those short a few bricks (used 'em as ballast!)....
"What!?!?!? I installed/replaced the engine impeller(s) and there are bubbles coming from under the boat!!!!"
(Ie. what'll happen when the impeller housing is installed backward and not pulling water into the engine(s).
In such a case, swallow your pride, IMMEDIATELY shut down the engines, pull the impeller(s) and install correctly. I found that marking with "line up" arrows with a sharpie and labeling the housings <port> or <stbd> works wonders.
)
There are several folks who (hopefully) can recommend a quality surveyor in that area. I'd suggest a contingency clause in your purchase contract to the effect that "purchase is contingent on a satisfactory PROFESSIONAL survey being completed.".

When I needed a surveyor eons ago, Boat US (my choice for insurer) had a list of qualified surveyors in my area. Agree on the contract clause and also recommend that the surveyor be on the no-nonsense, strict side and, of course, that the seller/broker had no hand in selection.
(chuckling at the impeller note -- it happened to me when the yard guy put them on backwards. Luckily, no damage)

I probably should just let Bill shoot me - that is if my wife doesn't... lol
Well anyway if this deal gets made, I have looked up the Boat US list. Thank you for that.
If all goes well there will be a very nice 28 for sale in the spring...

John,
I used the following Surveyor a few years ago when I bought my M which was also on lake St. Clair. He advised against the first one I looked at due to corrosion in the bilge area. He discounted the survey on the one O ended up purchasing. I highly recommend him:
Capt. R.D. Galeota Jr., SA
