Swim Ladder Question/Restoration

I'm in the process of rebuilding my Swim Platform Swing Down Ladder and I have some questions. I've attached three pictures of the swing down section of the ladder off of my 1990 32' FB Sedan. I need some help. I'm not sure if it is all original or if it has been modified or repaired by a previous owner so I'm hoping you have a similar ladder and we can make some comparisons. As you can see it has two vertical stainless steel frame members left and right, two aluminum HY STYLE step treads and the bottom section consists of two aluminum halves both bent at 90 degrees and spliced in the center with a short aluminum tube splice. This aluminum two piece bottom section is the part of this ladder that I bring into question. With the splice right in the center (where swimmers would take their first step onto the ladder) it was bent, it is a weak link. I'm asking do you too have this split and spliced aluminum bottom section on your boat? Can you please attach a picture to this topic string when you reply so that I can compare? My configuration either came from the Marinette factory this way or was modified/repaired by a previous owner. I don't often ask for help but I need some now...

Carl,

I'm not at the boat but I can tell you that my '88 does NOT have that type configuration. Bottom rung/step is a full step (such as your 2 at the top). I believe the PO added that in order to make it easier to board the step platform (would extend deeper in the water). Actually, not a bad idea tho I agree with you the split at the bottom of your lowest rung is definitely a weak spot. While I haven't been overboard in a number of years (there is something to be said when addressing the "Admiral" in a polite way - no plank walkin' :lol: ) I seem to remember getting aboard was a bit of a challenge because the bottom rung/step didn't extend too far down into the water.

... I have to talk to the next whale I meet... blubber doesn't float like I was told! :mrgreen:

Threw my ladder away, along with the air conditioner. Never going to need them! But what you have looks like a repair or modification. I would place a longer sleeve over or inside the bottom. A sleeve could go all the way across the bottom.

Hi Carl your ladder has been modified. I modified mine in a similar way but I used stainless chain and a starboard tread . The chain is small enough to fit into the down tubes of the ladder secured by the though bolts, the ends of the tread are notched just enough to accept the chain and stay aligned with down tubes. The chain is secured across bottom of the starboard tread with two small half round clips screwed in from the bottom. This mod really aides getting out of the water and looks good when you pull up the ladder not sticking up any higher than the stock ladder.

Thank You Gentlemen for your input and information. Today I pulled everything apart for my refurbishment and headed to the blast booth with all of the aluminum pieces in hand to clean them up for the powder coater tomorrow when I realized the two aluminum bottom tubes bent at 90 degrees are actually the legs off of a summer lawn chair! If you look closer at the pictures you too will see it. Admittedly I never really looked at this swim ladder before, other than removing it and placing it in storage knowing I would get to it in due time, well today was that day and I now realize that a previous owner must of had an issue one way or another. Their choice in fixing it is a real disappointment to me, not the way I would have done it. So now I am left with the same questions I started this topic/post with...what came originally on this boat from Marinette? Was there a third step?, What was the configuration? How long was it? Anyone with any more information, preferably a picture or better yet an actual swim ladder you may have in your garden shed you are willing to part with I would like to hear from you please. In a pickle here...

My 39 has just a 2 step ladder - like your ladder started out as. My 28 has a 3 step ladder but was probably not original. The 2 step isn't much shorter than the 3 step as the steps are further apart. I have not mounted or used the 2 step on the 39 yet. From experience, the deeper into the water these steps go, the better - for this old guy anyway...

If you are poundagely challenged, as I am, there's no way you can climb a two step ladder! I too added a step to mine, and also my new-to-me 19 foot bow rider.

Why manufacturers do that mystifies me.

Today I took apart the stationary (upper) section of the swim ladder, cleaned all of the parts and reassembled it. Don't forget to use a drop of Loctite thread locker on the nuts during reassembly or nylock nuts if you prefer. I'm still working through my fix on the swing down section of the swim ladder, more to come as I sort that out...

Carl, I want to modify my 86 Express ladder to be the same as your photo! do you think I can fabricate this from scratch? my ladder is just the swingdown - and I have a foot step mounted on the transom. I'm short and need this type of config.

If you have the old parts, I would love to borrow them for a template.
