Ignore your timing mark on the dampner, it may have slipped. If it runs good it sure isn't at 36degrees BTDC.

Using flywheel marks showing basically same thing. (Only about 2 degrees difference).

First thing I would do is a compression test, popping through the carb under load could be ( among other things) a blown head gasket or it could have a valve or two not seating.

Or a mixed up in the spark plug wires. Easy to mess them up the way the wires dive under the manifolds.

Thanks guys. I agree Jeff! I actually replaced the plugs last weekend and was very careful. I'm going to try to take it out and see. Timed it by RPM's in the dock got it up to 1800 in gear runs like a champ. Didn't want to take it higher. Lake Michigan has been brutal on the west side. Looking for a calm test day. Still a mystery why the marks are off so much, but we'll see what happens. Of course the timing light went out on me too.

By the way I am running OEM plug wires no issues.

I don't want to jinx myself but I think I found the problem. Petronix distributor shipped with silver springs which was also acknowledged earlier in the forum. I wasn't getting any advance until 2200 rpm. I finally got some decent weather and was able to run again. Both engines crapped out this time. Limped back in under 1000. Switched out the springs to gold and set the timing back to 5 degrees. Both engines running like a champ! Gradual advance while accelerating from idle. Thanks to everyone that helped me talk through it!
