Trolling Speed

Post by saltine »

I want to do a lot of slow trolling (1-1.5 mph) and I am not sure if my boat will achieve that. Anybody know roughly how fast a 28 Sportsman with 318's idles in gear on one engine?

I don't want to go in and out of gear and there are no trolling valves for 71c's. I don't want a kicker. Might have to look at different trannys that take a trolling valve, unless these boats can putter along slow then I can stop worrying. Thanks for any info

My 28 express with 350 chevy's, which were about the same with the 318's, trolls around the high 2's to 3 mph in gear one engine at idle. I use trolling bags to get it down to where I want it. Hang them off your side cleats with a rope off the back to make sure they stay out of the props. Amish outfitters makes some nice bags. When using only one bag, hang it off the same side as the running engine, this will help counteract the pull of the bag.
