New to Marinette. Made new exterior emblems.

Post by javalin390 »

Hello, I'm Jim. Just purchased my first boat, a 1975 Flybridge Sedan, with twin Chrysler 360's. She was overall in good shape, and I have been making improvements all winter. Just dropped it in Lake Erie, in Marblehead, Ohio and found out one of my rudders leak. Bummer. Guess I'll have to follow FastJeffs Rudder repair instructions ! I have successfully re-cast new plastic Marinette emblems that were mounted to the outside of the hull. If anyone would like to learn how, let me know, it's easy & cheap. The moldable plastic can be purchased at Hobby Lobby, Pat Catans, or any hobby store for around 10 bucks. Mine are Exact copies, as I used one of the original emblems as a mold.

I am interested to find out how you did this. My Marinette nameplates are in three pieces.

Sweet. I was thinking about using West System Epoxy for that, but then thought just having someone print vinyl would better.. Ended up doing neither. So where are you in Marblehead? Did you buy Elvis's (Ed's) boat?
Enjoy!

Jim,
Great find on the Plastic emblem problem. :D

The water seepage at the rudder can be fixed by adjusting the white plastic packing gland at the top of the rudder post. There should be a s.s screw going down thru the top nut to keep it from loosening. The gland is held in place by a rubber hose. Its kind of hard to see. You will have to get down and personal with it. Try adjust it first, may save you having to haul the boat before fall.

I will try to put together a visual presentation of how I made new emblems. One of my sea horses lost its snout, and the other broke its tail in 4 different places in the process of cleaning up the old emblems so I could use them as molds. They are 40 years old, after all, the plastic is dry & very brittle, and had 3 or 4 coats of different colors of paint on them. Sean, I am docked at Lakevue in Marblehead. There are 4 other Marinettes there too. A 28, a couple 32's and a small one I'm not sure what size. Mine's the 37'. "Chuck it All" is her name, But I may re-christen her. I will be up there over the May 1st weekend, gonna go to the Catawba Island Boat Show on Saturday> I can bring the mold with me and show anyone there how to make new emblems.. I'll be playing with the Port rudder over the weekend, I've already adjusted the plastic packing nut, had to go all the screwed in to slow down the leak !

Jim,
It would be great if you could post some pictures of how you made the mold for the emblems. ;)

 The plastic packing gland has packing in it similar to your propeller shaft packing. I wouldn't attempt repacking them in the water. It would be better to do them after the boat is pulled and on the hard. It can be done in the water  , but I have seen the rudder slip out of the packing gland and end up on the bottom of the creek and then you are looking at a 1" hole with a lot of water spaying up in your face. :o
