For when you'd like to blast the hull / other metal parts...

I ran across this YouTube video about a DIY sandblast unit for under $10 (Jeff'll love it! ). It's not for large jobs but if you'd like to blast (uses walnut shells from Harbor Freight) a spot/section on the boat this might be useful. It would eliminate sanding swirls.

One caveat...
The YouTube setup refers to not cutting off the bottom of the pop bottle in order to refill with walnut shells because of blowup of the shells when air is applied. You could, with a little modification, use the shell of an old thermos bottle as your container. The "lid" of the thermos bottle is plenty thick for the insertion of the blow tube and you can unscrew the bottom to refill.

Have one like it for years--and got it cheaply (of course). Great tool.

The problem with these is that they go through sand at a ferocious rate and you have to constantly refill the hopper. Also, the sand has to be filtered to remove any semi-large stones that clog the nozzle. I made a screening deal to do that before finding a source of filtered sand.
