Fuel System Restoration: Tanks to Carbs...

Here are some pictures of my fuel system restoration. Pulled both tanks, had them steam cleaned inside and out, visually inspected them and then had them pressure tested SAT. Installed new sending units in both tanks, found the Port sending unit to have been properly cut, adjusted and installed from the factory but the Starboard sending unit was completely wrong, 28 years of bad information coming from that tank, must have troubled the previous owners. Installed new 2" wide Buna-N Rubber strips under, around and on top of tanks. Cleaned and polished all of the copper fuel lines and visually inspected them SAT, no pitting, remarkably as good as new. Pulled the Perko naval bronze pre-filter/water separators, bead blasted them clean and installed new Perko filter elements. Cleaned and lubricated the manual gasoline valve manifold station SAT. Moving on to the next set of spin on fuel filters inline to the carbs and then I will rebuild both carbs prior to filling both tanks with fresh fuel and Sta-bil. More to come...

I hope you glued those rubber strips to the tank with 5200 adhesive.

Actually Jeff, these Buna-N rubber strips came 2" wide x 36" long from Grainger. They are peel and stick, once I cut them to length and applied them to the aluminum frame members I could not remove them. So when you install new rubber in your boat Jeff, be sure to line it all up just right because they are unforgiving...

As I watch Carl's progress it is amazing to see the craftmanship he has put into this 32. It is going to be much better than factory when he gets done. He does everything the right way the same as he would at work for Westinghouse on a power plant. He doesn't get in a hurry. I couldn't even pull him away to go for a boat ride and dinner. It has been a educition being on the same dock . Nice guy.

Glad to see you're retaining those Perkos--darn good unit. I use a small mason jar to drain them and check for water/ crud.

Both fuel tank sending units are now wired. I turned on my ignition keys to energize both circuits and both fuel gauges bumped up to the "Empty" hash mark. I'm calling this installation "Tested SAT" for now but anxious to see what they read as I fuel both tanks up. Both tanks are 75 gallons each, I intend on deliberately pumping 10 gallons at a time into each tank and noting (documenting) where my gauges read as I fill up for the first time. This data should help me moving forward when I'm underway, better knowing and understanding just how much fuel I have onboard in the tanks. Understanding the fuel level registered on the fuel gauge while underway will be different than sitting static at the dock. One more parameter to consider. More to come...

When I changed the gages in mine, I deliberately set them up so there was at least 10 gallons of gas in the tanks on 'E'. I know; it's only a psychological thing, but it helps when the marina is a long way off.
