Metals Mistakes
Metals Mistakes
I am new to the forum and have a 65' Marinette 31' that I acquired recently. As my wife continuously reminds me this boat was supposed to be ready to go. I have learned much shadowing the forum and when I work on something I feel I'm already an old hand at this because of everyone else's experiences here on the forum. So I'm going to give back. Hopefully you can see the pictures as I upload.

Mind you I wouldn't know anything about this if I had not read the countless posts here and on fastjeffs tripod site.

Ouch. So there was a brass cutlass, what was the cause of your other pitting?

Re: Metals Mistakes
Well I believe the marina where PO kept the boat previous has major stray current issues. When I disconnected shore power I closed the breaker box and leaned against adjacent metal houseboat (I'm 6'-10" 275lbs) it darn near knocked me 10 feet. This boat has never seen anything but freshwater. It was completely refit, new power, awlgrip paint, etc. 2004-2007. Engines and transmissions last in 2007. It sat in the slip for a year and a half with only a caretaker that cranked the engines monthly. I new about some of the problems but the pitting caught me by surprise. Of course I'm the smartest guy on the planet and have owed many boats so I didn't bother to consult a surveyor that I am sure would have insisted we scrape the algae off at least and take a peek. Surprise surprise.

Re: Metals Mistakes
Calivanos, I am interested in how the boat performs with the V-6's. Trying to get an idea on what I might do when a repower is needed.

Calivanos,
There's a wealth of detailed info on fixing the pitting, some of which was recently added.
In a (coconut) shell...
1. Blast the bottom
2. Immediately (with 2 to 3 hours) of blasting apply a non-copper based 2 part epoxy primer (Interlux's Interprotect 2000E is great).
3. Use PC-11 epoxy fairing to fill the pitting (smooth as much as possible cuz this stuff is a bear to work after it cures <a good thing for tuffness reason>).
4. Apply several more coats of primber (I did 4, alternating black and white with white the last one. Makes it easy to spots not painted).
5. Apply 2 coats of bottom paint (Micron33 by Interlux is my choice. \
NOTE - I believe you need to get the 1st coat of bottom paint within a certain time frame after the last coat of epoxy is applied.
The final coat can wait a bit.

Re: Metals Mistakes
Thank you Bill. I really like that PC 11, it is strong stuff, sand with chain saw!
