Sierra 49409 1" Stuffing Box DISCONTINUED

Post by Tinman »

Hi All,

I have a '69 28' Sportfisherman, single repowered to Merc 5.0L TBI. My Stuffing box (Sierra 49409 - 1" plastic stuffing box) was shot and I can't find a replacement.

Replaced shaft this Winter and went with LasDrop, but have conductivity due to the salt water bearing lubrication line. Keep her at High and Dry, so it is serviceable, but must be replaced.

Please help me find one. I wonder if I could have one made, but don't know where or how. LasDrop cost $400 installed. I asked if it was isolated, they said yes and it is without water, but it won't work without water. :(

Try this one shows in stock.
These are more common for Rudder Stuffing box rather than Prop Shaft. No reason not to use a Bronze box on a shaft with GFO packing. Your isolation is at the coupler. The log hose isolates from the shaft log.

I replaced the plastic stuffing box with a bronze Buck Algonquin stuffing box. Rubber hose and packing material isolate it from the hull.

Personally, I didn't like the thought of a 1/16" plastic fitting holding out the lake water.
