Welding/ Alloy type.

Post by seef158 »

I am thinking about having a bow eye welded onto my 1978 28 express for trailering. Not sure I want to drill holes in the front end for the bolt through style if I don't have to. I want to quiz the guy I may have weld it as to if he knows proper technique for this alloy but I can't seem to find the alloy type in my research. What is the type of aluminum these boats are made out of again? Thanks!

Made of an aluminum, manganese, magnesium alloy called 5086 – H116.

The correct welding wire is 5356

Is this the same alloy they used for the struts?

The skin is 5086, extrusions for the stem and keel are something else. 5086 is hard to find, mostly 6061 is used, and the filler wire for a MIG gun is different like Jeff says. Here might be a pic of what I did. Strong enough to pick the boat up using the eye.
