Regular Maintenance Questions

Post by Tranquilo »

What are some things we should do regularly?

For example, my rudder seems like its getting hard to turn. Should I be doing anything to the cables, is there a grease fitting I should hit?

Does anyone have the service manuals for the transmissions?

I'd like to put a checklist of annual stuff to test or do.

If it's a Borg Warner trans, that should be available on the internet. Google for it

I had the same "hard" steering issue with our 28' last season. It was more apparent during starboard turns. This is the direction pulling the cable over the steering gear inside the gear box. The ultimate problem was the steering gear box behind the helm. It was bone dry. I pulled the cable and steering gear from the boat, disassembled, cleaned and greased it.

You might check the rudder stuffing box to ensure it is not over tightened. I loosened mine until it leaked and then slowly tightened one flat at a time until it stopped leaking.

Steering box & rudder - I'll check that out this weekend

I found a bunch of transmission docs. Any place we can upload them to on this site?
