V6 Crusaders

Post by balthaus »

Greetings to all,
I was looking around on Craigslist and saw a 1980 28ft SDFB for sale for a really good price. However, she has twin v6 Crusaders (165 hp each) and that sort of threw up a flag for me. Currently the boat is a lake boat but I would bring her back home to Louisville an put her on the river. Any thoughts / comments on the v6's themselves and or v6's in that boat on the Ohio River?

Great manuverability in river currents and better economy .

Thanks for your response.
I have a couple of other Marinettes that I am interested in looking at as well.

Twin V6 Crusaders sounds like a cool setup to me. A large number of 28' Marinettes have a single Chrysler 318. In my mind, 3 benefits of this setup would be: more horsepower than a single, easier maneuverability , and the redundancy/safety of 2 engines.

If your single engine dies on the river, you're at the mercy of the current until you can throw an anchor and get help. I worry about that a bit with my boat on the Mississippi.

Sounds awesome, 330HP, you'd be putting out the same HP as a single 440 Chrysler, with more maneuverability. Hmmmm.........165HP v6?????? what kind are they? The old I-6 (250ci) were 165HP, are you sure they are V6's?????, if so they should be 190 or 205HP. Not that it really matters, either way it would be a good engine. You may look into it though, that way you know what you are buying.

Marinette offered 28s with twin V-6s. Seems to me they would be just fine as everyone suggested.

I suspect the 6s would be easier to work on too: Try removing the raw water pump on the port engine on my 28.

I'd go for it.

Good luck.

I did not realize that they offered v6's from the factory. I agree that the 6's seem like they would give more wiggle room in the bilge.
I can't get down to look at her this weekend, although the owner said that someone else is looking at her this Sunday. For the asking price though I might have to try and get to get down to look at her ( almost 8 hr round trip).

I have not looked at her...yet.
I have spoken with the gentleman that owns her now and he said someone was looking at her this past Sunday. Apparently she did not sell because there was a price reduction today.
Just need to find time to make the day of it.
