Mr. Starboard has turned what's left of my hair even greyer this summer, but I fixed it's stubborn butt this week. To wit:
Hard starting, suddenly dying after idling for a few minutes, stalling while maneuvering (usually with people watching!) and other crapola. Changed the ballast resistor, put in a new coil and a new ECU--no difference. Checked for spark: it was orangey an about a 1/4 inch long. What's this? I thought, for usually it was 3/4 inch long and blue. Since I had changed everything else (and it was not going through the dist cap) there was only one thing left: the coil wire. Borrowed the one from Mr. Port and--voila! Bright blue spark! And it only cost me a new ballast resistor, coil ECU...
So check that spark if your motors aren't running right.
