Stalling near dock
Stalling near dock
I have been stalling out around the dock (at idle) the last few times I have been out. It started with my Starboard engine but yesterday it happened on my port also. It happens when I'm in gear and maneuvering in and out of my dock. I'm idleing at about 680rpm normally. I'm going to change plugs and wires. Do you guys recommend anything else? I have electronic ignition.

might be the computer control module, or gas, do you have water separators on?

Cap and rotor. Wells is a good brand
Stay clear of Sierra .
Check the vendors list for part numbers.
might be the computer control module . Don't think an 86 had a computer.

Re: Stalling near dock
Before you jump into ignition related issues... Both engines.... not likely the problem.
Start with the easy may fix....
Buy carb cleaner or Sea Foam.
Start engine and start pouring into the carb throat. Flood it to kill the engine.
Let sit for 20 min. or so....
back up...
Spray additional cleaner this time do not kill engine.
If your jets are clogged it sometimes will clean them out.
I also have used MMO and did the same thing but slower.
If not... tear down carbs and clean. (at least the jets)

I normal run a gallon of sea foam through half way thru summer,I have yet to do it... I'm going to do the plugs, wires, and sea foam and see what happens. If it comes to it where would I find the computer modualar on the motors ?

Re: Stalling near dock
Bad batteries will cause weak ignition. If you are using parallel swith to start stalled engine the bat is weak.
Not ecu with both acting up.
Is your fuel old?
Did you add fuel cleaner to the tank? That will knock gunk loose in tank... Not recommended
Both carb idle circuits may be clogged. Screw the idle circuit screw out and in a few times try, that should clear trash.. Count turns then try sea foam in the carb like the guys said. If you have the original carbs you may want to consider updating to edelbrock carbs.. Easy install. Check national carburetor online.
Let us know what you find.

Re: Stalling near dock
To me 680rpm seems too low for idle AND manuvering.. Especially if you are stalling when switching from FWD to REV.. Seems to me my rpm I would set at 750-800 while manuvering through the marina.. There are two different idle adjusting screws on your carbs. One is for low idle if I remember correctly.. My '32 did this same thing and I adjusted those and all was well. Remember to try the EASY stuff first. It's too easy to over complicate small issues and you can't get time back wasted on goose chases. Let us know!

Re: Stalling near dock
Chrysler engine manual says 600-700 rpm idle in gear.

Re: Stalling near dock
Ryan,
Any progress?
I am having similar issues with both motors. Motors stall as trans is engaged.
Problem will correct itself, after idle-ing or sitting with motors off for a while, and then re-appear.
