Pertronix D241801 install
Pertronix D241801 install
Hi everyone, long time reader of forum, first time asking a question. Just purchased two new Pertronix D241801 distributors during Amazons Prime Day for $198 each. For that price I thought I would give them a try. My plan is to install new distributors and bypass original system while still leaving it intact. The engines are 1979, 318s with electronic Ignition. Questions:
1. The directions that came with the distributors simply show connections to the coil(and retiming of course). Is that it? I am assuming disconnecting the module plug. Anything else?
2. Does the coil need to be replaced, it is "for resistor use". Does it need to be replaced with a coil that is used without a ballast resistor.
Thanks in advance

Best to replace with new internal resisted coil

Are there clockwise & counterclockwise in terms of the way the advance weights spin? The Chrysler Marine parts catalog does not specify.

They are both the same distributors, they both spin the same way.The firing order is differend on each motor.
I installed two of these on my 28'.The first two rusted so badly within two seasons they were not useable.
Pertronix sent me two new ones which olso rusted immediatly. Pertronix later sent me two more new ones. These were supposed to be nickle and stainless steeel. The advance springs are the only components that did not rust. I have to sand the rust off every season.I also spray them with rust preventitive .I started using pertronix solid filled coils could not get a full season out of them I now use nappa marine coils. So far so good.Pertronix does not reccomend a ballast or resisted coils. I is a plug and play easy to install. I am pretty dissapointed with these distributors and coils.
Good luck!

Re: Pertronix D241801 install
I have been a field tester for Pertronix and am on the 3rd season.
I do have to clean lightly each spring and fall and spray them with spray lube.
No running issues .
safe boating,

Thanks for the information, my plan is to have the old distributors rebuilt. Do any of you know of a shop that does that kind of work(i.e. Marine distributors)

Re: Pertronix D241801 install
Installed the distributors this weekend and wanted to share some first impressions.
1. Very easy to install, followed the directions and the help from the forum and was back up and running in short order. no physical modifications were needed and simpley bypassed the old system, unplugged the module, while leaving everything intact.Timed to 5 degrees BTDC and that was it. Although I had no real issues before the switch, I do think idle has improved along with overall smoothness.
2. Two issues that will now have to be adressed is the loss of my tachometers and the hot wire running to my 1409 carburetor. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks for the heads up on the shop to rebuild the old distributors
3. I also added two new coils from Autozone, Accel super stack yellow coil rated at 1.4 ohms

You should not loose your tachs. They connect to the coil.
Wipe them down twice a year and spray light penetrating oil on the dist. You will see some light corrosion but only on the plates and weights.
