Make sure to always look for shims under the sleeve or even the dizzy. Any past work on the heads, intake, rebuild or repower could call for adjustment to the shim pack. This is what sets the oil pump gear clearance on a reverse rotation motor and on a standard you run the risk of the end of the dizzy binding.

I have a 73 318 I'm putting this on today. Do I need to mess with the mechanical advance limiter stuff or springs?

The stock springs seem to line up with the typical RPM ranges of an LM 318

Never mind. Lined up 45 degrees off the alignment of the old distributor. Sending it back and going back with the stock stuff or maybe the under cap mod if I can get that in less than a week and a half. What a waste of time

The little instruction card told me it had to line up to the first cylinder, just like the old one. After lining that up to number 1, the new one lined up to number 6

Are you saying I should have just tried to start it with that?

Sorry, there was no info other than a basic uninstall - reinstall process

Looks like you may have been on TDC of the intake stroke or you needed to turn the rotor 180 deg if you are sure you had it on the compression stroke.

I wish the 180 worked but it was 2 cylinders off. :D

So, the actual compression position would change the position of the rotor that much? Being that there isn't a spline but rather a slot, I would think it would be either dead on the old position or 180 off.

The shaft rotates the rotor directly (ie: 1to1). So, I don't understand how it could make such a difference. :?:

Is it possible that the positioning got changed from stock when the engine was rebuilt? I don't see an adjustment on the pertronix distributor to change the position of the rotor on the distributor shaft. I would totally try to line them up if I could

You may not be on 1.

1. Put on 1 TDC compression
Put dist. In
2. Number 1 wire put lined up to rotor.
3. Put rest in firing order.
4. Time 5 degrees btdc

You can never tell about rebuilt and how your motor is vs the stock unmolested state. I can say in the past on many motors if everything has been put back correct when rebuilt the timming mark and the rotor will align or point near the number one cyclinder.(THE KEY here is TDC of compression strock) Even if it does not like Barrkleydave is saying what ever the direction of the rotor move the number one wire to that spot on the cap then move the rest to the correct firing order and it will run and time fine. If you are sure you have it on the compression stroke It should have the timing marks on the flywheel 5 0 5 and A metal tag or arrow like pointer above the flywheel.
