Distributor upgrade for 440 RH???

Post by Maestro »

All this distributor talk got me thinking...followed some of the links that Bill provided.

Seems like there is plenty available if you have a 318 or 360. Didn't see anything for a Chrysler 440 Right Hand rotation engine. Has anyone on this forum with a RH 440 done a distributor upgrade? What did you use? Just curious.

I'm really trying to like pertronix but read pro and cons and some customer service problems. I did speak with Mallory and they have been purchased by MSD. In the past the MSD group was good in the car market. The engineer said the company was trying to figure out what the future was going to look like for the marine market. With this said I'm going with a pertronix. You may also ask if they can refurbish your stock setup. Good luck.

Try Davis Unified Ignition
performancedistributors.com They will build a marine setup for you. Basically a 1 wire juiced up GM HEI system.
They work great, but are not the cheapest out there.
On guy on here has them and loves them. My boat came with Mallory(MSD) installed already, my other boat and jeep run this set up.
Never an issue - at least 9 years in a skiboat .

Just installed them (performance distributors) in our 318's for $385 per engine add $100 per engine for their spark plug wires. Get the wires four inches longer with straight plug boots for the plug end. Very pleased with them! Thanks Scott for the recommendation! I used (iridium plugs) from Autolite.

Could you supply our members with exact ordering info on those wires? They would help a lot of people.

Did Davis unified suggest the plug and heat range?

They recommended at least platinum plugs. The Champion plug specified for the 318 was cross referenced to the stock heat range in an Autolite plug. It is the "63" in the Autolite plug. They did recommend that the gap be widened to .055 to achieve a better more thorough burn. I spoke to Bryan there. The plug wires I received originally were too short. I requested them 4 inches longer and they sent them to me and I will return the original ones at no charge. They understand that we have one engine runs backwards with a twin application.
