Raw water system diagnosis

Post by bolsado »

Confused

89 32. Sedan 318w
Strainers have pretty low flow but cool ok unless keeping longbtime
Cleaned w raw water strainer and now no flow. 3ngine temps rose and straner flowed past gasket and over flowed. Rechecked tightness and no flow. Pulled hose from trans cooler to rap found some rubber. Pulled hose above pump no rubber but rusty. Pulled and cleans all lines back to strainer still no flow. Thoughts before pulling impeller?????

It has been my experience that the strainer bowl will fill all by itself if the way to the source is clear. Perhaps the under hull pickup is blocked or the hose to it will not flow. Try back flushing the line to the strainer.

Thnx

No blockage at the thru hull pick up below boat. Easy to get in the water here it's 110 degrees. Some swim Goggles hold breath

I'll try back flushing next.

Anyone know how you can tell which model pump. Is there a stamp on it somewhere

Since you found rubber in the oil cooler the next immediate step was to pull the impellers because that's where the rubber would have come from. I suspect enough damage to cause your water flow issue. The other clue is that there is overflow at the strainer. That should never happen with a properly working pump/impeller system.

When you see the impeller you will have an idea of how much loose rubber you should be retrieving from the hoses and oil cooler
