360 Timing Marks

Post by balthaus »

So I was down working on the BigM this morning and attempted to adjust the timing.
Once I figured out where the timing marks are I could not really read them (stronger cheaters may be in order....I need to get stronger ones to solder xlr connectors anyway).
The flywheel is a bit rusty but it appeared to me that the 2 marks ( perhaps 1.5" apart on the flywheel) I saw were the same symbol/number.
I could not make out any hash marks at all.
What should I be seeing?
Thanks in advance.

Wire brush the loose dirt and rust from the marks and put white out or soapstone in the marks. Don't know what marks are on the dampener, I have Chevy engines and the Chilton's I have does not say. Might look in a Motors manual. Or put the piston at TDC and see what mark lines up.

Check the main pulley on the front of the motor. There should be a timing tape on it.

For ease of setting timing, I lined up TDC with the main pulley and then painted a mark on the flywheel.

Well ....
Timing on port motor(stalls when trans put into gear) was way off.
I actually found the timing marks on the port motor flywheel.
A groove in the dampener as well as an inboard guage. Can't really say how far off the timing was....but it was pretty far off.
Motors sounded better as a pair and shifted (at dock) quietly and smoothly.
Will get out soon and see.
