No Charge Chrysler 360 Port side Engine

Post by nascarjonb »

I am kind of stumped because I have no voltage from the regulator to the alternator, but when I jump the regulator wires i still have no charge. I have verified that i have no resistance in the feed wire from the regulator to the alternator and i have ran a jump wire from power side of regulator straight to alternator post. Could I have a bad Alternator AND a Bad regulator? or is there something else im missing?

If you have power to the main stud on the alternator (Orange Wire) jump to the field terminal (Green Wire) from the regulator with the engine running. If it doesn't charge then the alternator is junk. The common failure is the rotor. It usually open circuits. Another test on the engine is see if you have continuity between the field terminal and ground. If you don't, you know the rotor is open or one of the brushes has an issue. Make sure the green wire is disconnected at the alternator. Yes, if the rotor shorts, if can take the regulator with it. With the key on, regulator case grounded, and 12V to the red plug on the regulator, the stud that the green wire connects to should have 8-12V on it. If it doesn't, its junk as well.

I have determined that the alternator is junk and the regulator is junk as well... i am thinking of my options but I am leaning toward a one wire alternator system... has any one had any experience in this?

Might be of assistance, I'm having the same problem currently. I've finally tracked mine down, to the voltage regulator field relay.

IMHO one wire only way to go. You will need to run heaver gauge (6AWG) wire have a good ground, and go directly to each batter. Be sure to fuse the positive output to the battery with the appropriate size fuse. Put fuse as close to battery try to keep it within few ft.

I have had my one wires running now for 10 years they work great !

That relay was only used 1971 and back with the Chrysler alternator. No need to run a 6 gauge wire. The 1 wire unit charges 60-75amp and the factory 10 gauge wire is sufficient.

Mine is located above the transmission next to the voltage regulator.
