The question is: Is it marked "Ignition Protected"? If UL approved it will be marked. If no,t you could be making a dangerous assumption. Also the one that is "Marine" will have better corrosion protection (copper, nickel etc) on the terminals for the marine environment.

There's two varieties of these things: Those meant for starting the engine, and those that are a remote switch (left on) for paralleling the batteries. The latter is 'soft' energizing and can be left on without damage.

The automotive solenoids do not have a long enough bracket to use both mounting bolts. Other than that they work just fine and are safe to use.

Hey Fastjeff,
Question on those other solenoids with battery cables running to them. That is the first time I have seen that on my "new to me" marinette. Necessary? Still do not completely understand the purpose and have seen the set up without.

On my 1975 37 Marinette with two batteries and one of those batteries runs all the 12 volt stuff. Some times the house battery drains down one battery and the engine wont turn over. There is a parallel switch on the lower helm, it looks like a silver horn push button. This actuates the parallel solenoid switch in the engine compartment. Just like jumping a dead car battery but with press of a button instead of jumper cables .
