cushion foam smell removal
cushion foam smell removal
Anyone have any suggestions for removing the smell from the foam inside the cushions? My boat had a mildew problem when I got it and the room im currently storing the cushions in stinks. Im afraid after I rebuild the whole interior they will bring the smell back into the boat.

If a soaking in a bleach/water solution for a couple of hours (then rinsing thoroughly) doesn't do it, chuck 'em. The mold is probably ingrained throughout the foam.

You could try setting them outside in the direct sunshine.
Remove the covers first.
Although I haven't seen the sunshine here for two weeks.

I tried all of the above, even did the ozone clean ( buddy has a fire restoration co) . Nothing worked very well . Wound up getting new foam the next year. You may have better luck than I did. Keep us posted . -Scott

Try this stuff. It's a little pricey so shop around. Used it the last 2 seasons. Boat smells awesome. I think I bought it a t Jamestown Distributors.

Next thing put charcoal in pie plates it'll take the smell out this works
Re: cushion foam smell removal
Norm reminds me that a fairly good odor absorber may be "activated" charcoal, available at fish hobby stores or other pet stores. It's sold as useful to take odors and gases out of aquarium water. I had an odor problem on the boat once (rotted bait) and it may have helped (or the odor disappeared on its own -whop knows?). It comes as little pieces of about fingertip size (as opposed to the larger pieces that are used for grilling) that present more surface area to absorb odors. You can google it to find a source.
In your case, circulation of fresh, dry air is important.
All that said, you may have so much mold in those cushions no odor stuff will do the job until the mold is destroyed or the cushions deep sixed.

Re: cushion foam smell removal
great idea on the activated charcoal. I have fish tanks so I have plenty of that stuff. I might try putting it in a filter sock then setting it behind a fan to help filter the air in the room.
