AC wire ? Water heater replacement?

Post by ukester »

So I have a 39ft Sedan that I am currently wiring and now am about to wire the ac part of this job. What I thought was just home wiring after looking at it it looks the same but on the side of the wire it states boat and something like 600 volts- are the home wire and the wire running for AC the same?
On another note after taking down the ceiling panels which look to be original I cannot believe the AC electrical wire that they used. It looked like speaker wire for the AC lights. The reason I posted this is if this is how this came others should replace there wiring before a problem comes up.
Has anyone replaced the water heater in one of there boats-how do you get that out-I have all the flooring out except right under the helm?

If anyone is interested in what your boat may look like under all the panels I will be posting pictures later this week.

Stranded wire is code for boat builders for AC now.

You want fine strand, tinned wire. See wire on right side of photo.
Check Anchor Marine wire at West Marine for a reference.

I have swapped out the water heater on my 39 sedan and it was in the wine cellar as we call it and it came through the door under the steps just fine but snug !! I do think i took the door off the hinges though. It was the original equipment in 1984

I just replaced my water heater with a Quick brand stainless water heater.
When I pulled the old one out it crumbled into a rusty heap.
The standard inlet and outlet fittings are 1/2" so your water lines should match up.
The electrical connections are straight forward (ground, neutral and line).
Make sure the water heater is full before you turn on the power or you will burn out the heater element.

Here is a source for the correct wire for your water heater install.

I would use 12 ga since a heater can draw 1,500 watts.

I always check Skycraft in Orlando to see if they have the wire I need before paying distributor prices. You need three-wire stranded tinned cable in 14 gauge at least for the 20 Amp circuits in a Marinette.
