Stock is 5 degrees BTDC. I wouldn't add more than a couple of degrees.

Update on Pertronix distributor field test.
Completed season #2
No issues with either Dist. Ran very well with easy starting.
Examination showed only light corrosion.
No corrosion on advance springs.
A little penetrating oil and a wipe down and most was removed.
Will be returning them to Pertronix for evaluation and then they will return them and I will run them next season.
The units come with a couple of different springs to change the curve. I experimented with them but found the default springs that were installed performed the best over the most used RPM range. No issued with sticking advance or idle issues.
I would recommend that they be considered as an alternative to our aging distributors.

I ended up going with the Mallory electronic distributors. So far so good. Will report corrosion when I winterize. No mechanical advance... seems like the way to go.

Looks like we have two alternatives that work well. Will be interesting to see your corrosion results on the Mallory's.
If you can post the model number of the Distributor you are using.
The Pertronix is listed as a Chrysler Marine Billet I think?

As many know I have been field testing the Pertronix Billet Distributors. This spring completes the test cycle unless Pertronix decides they want more time.
1. summer 1st season: Boat never ran better or started easier.
2. Fall: Slight corrosion from summer use. Springs clean, advance clean only slight corrosion on sole plate.
3. Spring: In water all winter. Inspection should no additional corrosion. What slight corrosion seems to have stabilized.
3. summer 2nd season Boat ran great. Very easy starting VERY hot spark!
4 Fall 2014: No change stable
5.Spring 2015: No change stable. Light lubrication cleans up nicely. Boat started easily and engine running smooth.
Looks like Pertronix got it right.
The only change would be to spend a little more and replace sole plate with stainless steel.

Fall Pertronix Update:
Completed the third full season with the test distributors from Pertronix. Ignition work perfectly with NO issue. No additional corrosion. Wiping them down with a penetrating oil removes light corrosion. When I winterize I pull the coil wire from the coil and turn the engine over a few times to pull Marvel Mystery oil through the carb. The Pertronix ignition is HOT HOT HOT. With the coil wire pulled at the coil it still shot a blue spark six inches to the intake manifold! ZAP!
