How to Tarp for the Winter

Post by Maestro »

This past fall, I debated whether to shrink wrap my 28' or attempt to cover her with a tarp. Decided to try the tarp.

I started by using 2"x4"x16' boards to create a giant "tee pee" skeleton to go over the boat. This consisted of a spine running the length of the boat, with triangular supports at the bow and stern. I decided to have the supports run all the way to the ground rather than resting on the deck of the boat. The cockpit hard top also helped support the weight of the spine.

I purchased a 50x25 foot tarp for something like $80 at Harbor Freight Tools. The tarp was stretched over the skeleton and bungee-corded to the trailer in as many spots as possible. Ratchet straps and ropes were then circled lengthwise around the boat at several different levels to remove slack from the tarp. Since the boat is only 28' long, the excess length of tarp was folded into the triangular 2x4 supports and strapped down to keep the wind from catching it.

We're not halfway-ish through winter and the whole system has held up surprisingly well. A few minor holes have developed in the tarp which have been patched with duct tape. Although there has been relatively little snow this winter, we have had a lot of wind, which is the tarp's main enemy.

When I began this project, I figured the tarp would be trash by the end of the winter. At this point I'm thinking there's a chance it could be re-used one more season. I can also save and re-use my 2x4's.

A harsher winter could prove me wrong, but so far this has been an inexpensive alternative to shrink wrapping.

UPDATE: Over 8 inches of snow fell this past week, tarp and frame held up just fine.
