Not sure if it was a member of this post, but someone has done a older 60's M, and as I recall it was a rather extensive (and expensive) endeavor. Outcome was beautiful, but involved welding on an additional couple feet to the boat for the outboard transom. Some other members of this site should remember her.

The link shown is the design phase, and I've seen photo's of the finished boat, just can't find them.

Here are some pictures. One of these is when he first put a single outboard on the boat. The rest are when he upgraded to twins.

Unless there is a specific reason for wanting outboards, I'd be willing to bet you could put rebuilt engines, transmissions, new struts and cutless bearings in cheaper with a lot less headaches. With close to the same reliability.

But where do you get the struts? That's the problem I had a few years ago. Fortunately John A was still in business and made one for me. By the time I had a shaft made, got the strut from John and the prop re-worked, I could have bought a lower unit and been back in business faster.

Nice job on that old boat by the way.

Got them directly from Marinette with new bearings, did take about a month and was a bit pricey but original equipment. Kept the old set for future reference.

Many small yacht manufacturers are going to big outboards. Why? More usable volume inside the hull and, with modern 4 strokes, a quiet efficient drive system. And they sure are a LOT easier to work on!
