You mentioned a Pertornix? Is it just the Module or a complete Pertronix Distributor?
If Pertronix Distributor is sounds like you are trying to use an incorrect cap.
With the Pertronix Module timing WILL NOT WONDER if the distributor is in good condition. If it is Pertronix it will have a collar over the cam and no reluctor.

I need to start a new post but im using a tablet and cannt seem to find a way to start a new post . i have most of the distributor Problems solved and started on the paint this year. Would like to find the original paint codes for white and blue.
