Dave, the old boats did use the $100 thermostats. They are in the 4th column.

You can also make a FJ CHeapo t-stat from a standard, low cost, smaller diameter t-stat.
Here's what it looks like. Use a stainless plate.

PS: This design also compensates for rotted out intake manifolds that let water slip by, extending the warm up period.
