On my 318, the oil cooler was at the base of the left side of the engine, about the size/shape of a can of soda (maybe a little slimmer). Halfway between front and rear of the engine. Sorry, but I deleted my cooler shots after selling the boat - I'm almost certain you may find one posted earlier on this board.

Just follow the lines coming off your velvet drive. It will go right to it.

I'm going to pull the exhaust manifold and oil cooler (while replacing the whole pump assy with a new one) to look for the reason it runs so hot on that side that it melts through the exhaust hose.

What should I be looking for? Never looked at any of this stuff before..

Thanks,
D

On the inlet side of the oil cooler, there is probably a large build up of debris. Get it all hosed out.

Wanted to drop an update on my quest for a cooler engine.. I got the oil cooler off and there was a bunch of "rust gravel" on the top side of it. I blew it out with a hose from the bottom and it just came out super easily.

Now the question I have is about the direction of the flow. The block was on the top of the cooler. The bottom of the cooler has a direct hose connecting to the bottom side of the pump. Does the pump draw water through the oil cooler (from top to bottom) or is the pump feeding its water through the bottom and out the top (making that gravel just runoff from the manifold)

Which way does the water flow through the cooler?

The side with all the junk is the inlet. That is the direction of the water flow. It fills up that side and has no where to go. The outlet side should have nothing on it.
