Never could tell myself, to be honest.

There are different kinds of mahogany, but they are all softer and more porous than teak. Teak will be hard, like walnut. Mahogany will have larger pores and will need a filler sometimes. You will probably just use what you have on the boat already, whatever it is. Just don't make the mistake of using a varnish that is not exterior spar varnish. The UV in the sunlight will destroy a regular varnish. Stains and oils that don't build up a surface film will be bleached by the sun, but with no film they won't peel.

The best way to tell if its teak is to scuff it with a coarse grit sandpaper and smell the area you have sanded it should smell almost exactly like shoe leather.
If you do a fair amount of sanding the dust will appear damp and clump together from the natural oil in the wood

My 1980 28' is teak for what it is worth. The factory used a spray on red mahogany stain to try and make it all look the same as teak can be any color from light to dark brown/red.
