No Sea Strainers!

I have two 318s in a 32' sport fisherman I recently bought. Neither engine has a strainer for the cooling water intake or a shut-off valve. I'm surprised to find these components missing--thought they were a standard. Does anyone else have this arrangement? I plan on adding these, especially the valve.

I've seen other manufacturers not use strainers but every Marinette I have seen had them. All boats should have shut offs.
Sounds like previous owner did some "custom upgrades".

Ditto - they're must have.

You're on the right track--both are essential. My 28 came standard with gate valves and I replaced them with safety seacocks:

They came in handy for winterizing.

I haven't seen them in any other boat, but my 28 had San Juan Sea Strainers. However, if you're starting from scratch let me recommend using something more common in so the parts are more readily available. Once upon a time, I burned a couple days searching for a replacement gasket and can't remember if I ended up making one or found them on E-bay.

Good luck.
