440 intake

Post by ukester »

thinking about replacing my 440 intakes with a pair of Edelbrock # 5091 Chrysler 413-440 Torker II Aluminum Intake Manifolds.
any one else done this-just checking my boat is a fresh water boat and cannot think of a reason not to do this.

Thanks Mark

I believe the marine intake is angled to keep your carb as level as possible. There might also be some safety issues involved. I would contact edelbrock and see if the intake was made to fit a marine engine.

the carb gasket is what is angled, I cannot see how changing to this manifold would present any risk.

Real question should be, will it really help?

I think if your not running WOT and not going to redo the whole top end, you may better spend your cash upgrading the ignition to burn hotter and maybe newer (jetted and tuned) 1409 carbs.

I was thinking about replacing the intakes on my 215's and found after a lot of reading that typical cruising RPMs (1800 - 2100) really did not get me much. So I went to new 1409's and Pertronix ignition. Yet to be seen how it will do, since I am building the engines now.

Of course this may be all different on the Crusader engines.

part is why I want to replace the intakes is the 1409 does not have the same base as the intake-the intake has the larger bores in back the new carbs have the holley style base. its more than a performance issue

You have fresh water cooling, right? If not...forget it! (Corrosion.)

Fresh water cooled = closed loop cooling. Block is filled with automotive type coolant. Raw water i cooled uses seawater(salt or fresh) for the coolant. Lake water is full of minerals and dis similar metals would cause galvanic action and corrode quickly. Coolant has additives that fight corrosion. I think that is Jeff's intention.

Correct, The motor MUST have a closed system cooling with anti-freeze in the block.
